Vortex Jazz Club and Vortex Downstairs
Contemporary, improvised and experimental rules at the Vortex Jazz Club, arguably one of the world's best jazz venues.
For 30 years, this not-for-profit venue has been a proud Hackney platform for unconventional music and forged a solid reputation for itself, despite its diminutive 100 capacity size.
Mercury-nominated bands such as Polar Bear and Portico Quartet have graced its stage, and saxophonist Evan Parker has been playing a monthly residency at the Vortex for over 15 years.
Each night is staffed by volunteers (with technical support), and all the club's directors are unpaid. Events are reasonably priced, with profits ploughed back into developing the club.
The building has two flexible spaces and equipment available for community and corporate hire, workshops, meetings, rehearsals and recordings.
The venue also has a café, bar known as Vortex Downstairs.
