The former Hoxton Library was given a new lease of artistic life when it became home to fringe production company Courtyard Theatre.
Fittingly close to Curtain Road in Shoreditch, site of the first purpose-built playhouses in England - the 'Theatre'(1576) and 'Curtain'(1577) - this heritage-listed building now houses two theatre spaces, a rehearsal room and bar.
By contrast to its historic venue, the Courtyard's emphasis is distinctly contemporary, and the theatre aims to unearth and sponsor the best new playwrights, directors and companies from a diverse range of backgrounds. From political theatre to live comedy, the venue aims to entertain, inspire and provoke.
The Courtyard also screens films, hosts live music nights and is available for hire for rehearsals and private events.
