David Brain piano recital at Sutton House
David Brain performs works by Prokofiev, Beethoven, Bach and Ravel in the beautiful setting of Sutton House
Dip into the world of classical piano with David Brain, who will perform works from across Europe spanning three centuries, from the baroque to the 20th century. Featured composers will be Prokofiev, Beethoven, Bach and Ravel. Tickets: £15, £10 concessions (over 65s and under 30s).
The programme begins with Prokofiev's Sarcasms, as audacious today as it was in 1913. This fiery clutch of preludes ushers in the new, futuristic style of gleaming steel and also breathes in the intoxicating atmosphere of late Scriabin.
In sharp contrast, Beethoven's A flat Sonata Op.110, the central work in his revered series of late Sonatas, reconciles both Baroque and Classical procedures whilst anticipating the lyricism of the Romantic movement.
After a short interval, David will play Bach's festive fourth Partita in D major, a thoroughly engaging work, concludes with one of his most joyous gigues.
The programme ends the way it began with another five movement suite in the form of Miroirs, Ravel's iconic contribution to the genre of keyboard Impressionism. Quite apart from the familiar dazzlement of Alborada del gracioso, we are offered vivid snapshots of glittering seas, whirring insects, birds and tolling bells.
